The Colorful History of Scorpions’ Hit “Rock You Like a Hurricane”: Why the Lyrics Had to Be Rewritten Nine Times?

2025.03.10 11:10

Legendary rock band Scorpions will celebrate their 60th anniversary on stage the way true rockers should—by embarking on a massive world tour. During this tour, the band will perform more than 30 shows, starting in South America, then shaking up Europe, and later crossing the Atlantic to North America. Lithuanian fans also have a chance to be part of this historic event—Scorpions will perform in neighboring Latvia on June 11. Without a doubt, all of their biggest hits will be played, including the 1984 classic “Rock You Like a Hurricane.” Recently, the band members revealed intriguing behind-the-scenes details about the song’s creation and the challenges it faced before making it to the recording studio.

The band needed a kick in the backside

Among the greatest rock anthems of all time, “Rock You Like a Hurricane” stands at the top. Released as the lead single from the album Love at First Sting, it secured the band’s place among the rock elite.

Guitarist and founding member Rudolf Schenker recalls that, following the release of their album Blackout two years earlier, the band had set the quality bar extremely high. The pressure to create something even more impressive seemed almost impossible.

“I wouldn’t call it pressure—it was more like a kick in the backside,” Schenker laughs. “We knew we wanted to do things better than before: plan bigger tours, record more popular songs, and sell more albums. But we never expected the massive wave of popularity that came with Love at First Sting,” the musician admitted.

The first version of “Rock You Like a Hurricane,” written by Schenker and vocalist-lyricist Klaus Meine, was completely different from the final version. The melody came first, and then Meine began working on the lyrics.

The lyrics were rewritten nine times

“It’s common for both lyrics and music to go through a long process of change before reaching the recording stage. But in the case of ‘Rock You Like a Hurricane,’ we had to rewrite the lyrics nine times. I had a very clear idea of how the song should sound, so we kept changing and rewriting everything until the final version finally felt right,” the guitarist explained.

While Meine quickly came up with the chorus, the rest of the lyrics just didn’t fit. Eventually, as we now see and hear, the song ended up with a rather provocative theme, exploring passion and indulgence—something influenced by the band’s drummer, Herman Rarebell.

“Klaus had the chorus, then Herman joined in and came up with some great lyrics that had multiple meanings. That’s how we wrote the song, even though we knew it was pushing the limits of decency a little. The funniest thing was that after the release, female fans would tell me how much they loved the song. I hope they understood that we weren’t taking ourselves too seriously,” Schenker recalled with a smile.

The band began recording Love at First Sting at the Polar studio in Stockholm. Bass guitar parts were played by Jimmy Bain and drums by Bobby Rondinelli, replacing Francis Buchholz and Rarebell, who were dealing with health issues at the time.

“We toured so much and worked so hard that I think that intense period took its toll. We had to slow things down, and the recording process was also delayed due to our heavy tour schedule. Later, we decided to channel that energy into starting the album over from scratch, which we did at our producer Dieter Dierks’ studio in Germany. The equipment there was quite advanced for its time,” the musician explained.

Schenker recalls that he and the other musicians felt that “Rock You Like a Hurricane” needed an explosive element, so they sent the track to yet another recording studio in New York for finishing touches.

“That’s where the idea for certain effects came in, like reverse echo, which really tied everything together and took the song to the next level,” Schenker said.

A special guitar snatched from under Eric Clapton’s nose

He vividly remembers the guitar with which he created and recorded this soon-to-be hit.

“I used a 1958 Gibson Flying V, which I bought from Alex Conti of the German band Lake. I spent an entire year trying to convince him to sell me the instrument. I know he had received a tempting offer from Eric Clapton, but he turned it down. When I finally took that guitar into my hands, I realized it was the best-sounding guitar I had ever played. Since then, I’ve managed to purchase four more of the same model, but this one still sounds the best. Of course, I never took it on tour—it was too risky,” the guitarist recalls.

Released as a single on January 30, 1984, “Rock You Like a Hurricane” became Scorpions’ signature song.

Still, Schenker regrets one thing—he believes it was a mistake to record the song digitally. According to him, digital technology at the time was not as advanced, and he still dreams of changing that: “I think it lacked the tonal warmth of old analog tape, which gives guitars a richer sound. That’s the only thing I would change about this song.”

The massive anniversary tour concert in Riga, where this legendary hit will be performed live, will take place this summer on June 11 at the newly renamed Xiaomi Arena (formerly Arena Riga). Tickets in Lithuania are available through Shownet.lt.

The concert is organized by the music agency M.P.3, which is also currently producing the Antikvariniai Kašpirovskio dantys tour across Lithuania’s smaller towns and bringing the U.S. rap legend The Game to Vilnius and Riga as part of his European tour.
