Before Camouflage Hits Vilnius: 15 Surprising Band Facts
The legendary band Camouflage will be visiting Lithuania in
a month, performing a concert at the Vilnius club "Kablys" on October
15th. To mark the occasion, we present 15 intriguing and little-known facts
about one of the most influential and interesting electronic music bands of the
1980s.
"Camouflage" - "Stranger’s Thoughts"
1. Originally formed under a different name
Formed in 1983 in the West German town of Bietigheim-Bissingen, the band was
originally called "Licensed Technology."
2. A name from Japan
The band borrowed the name "Camouflage," inspired by a song of the
same title by the famous Japanese electronic music group Yellow Magic
Orchestra.
3. Worked in factories
The band's musicians saved money for their first synthesizers and instruments
by working in factories.
4. A studio in the parents' basement
The band set up their very first recording studio in the basement of Heiko
Maile’s parents' house—ambitiously naming it "Boy's Factory."
5. Success started with a talent show
In 1986, the band won a talent contest organized by a local radio station. This
happened after a friend of theirs sent in a recorded demo tape without the
band's knowledge.
6. The first hit had a different title
The band's iconic debut track "The Great Commandment" was titled
"Suddenly Went Away" in demo recordings between 1983 and 1986.

7. Topping the US dance floors
Even though the band comes from Germany, "The Great Commandment"
achieved massive success in the US, where it spent three weeks at number one on
the famous Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs chart.
8. Outpaced Madonna and New Order
In 1988, with the song "The Great Commandment," these guys from a
small German town left music heavyweights Madonna and New Order—who were at the
peak of their popularity at the time—behind. This massive success came as a
surprise to the musicians themselves; for a long time, they believed the US
record label had simply mixed up the account numbers when transferring their
royalties.
9. The biggest commercial hit
While "The Great Commandment" opened doors to the world, the band's
most successful single in Europe became the 1989 song "Love Is A
Shield," which stayed in the German Top 10 for over half a year.

10. First album recorded in Belgium
Despite the band being German, their debut album Voices & Images was
recorded in Brussels, Belgium. It was produced by Axel Henninger, who helped
shape their unique, cold, "plastic" sound.
11. Heiko Maile – film composer
The brains behind the band, Heiko Maile, has earned immense respect outside the
group as a film soundtrack composer. He created the music for the movies Die
Welle and We Are the Night.
12. Recorded the album "Sensor" with legendary
producer Rob Kirwan
The band's album Sensor was partly recorded in New York together with
legendary producer Rob Kirwan, who has previously worked with U2, Depeche Mode,
PJ Harvey, The Cranberries, Simple Minds, Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson,
Elvis Costello, Sinéad O'Connor, Hozier, Editors, Glasvegas, The Courteeners,
The Horrors, The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, Soulsavers, Soulwax, and Sneaker
Pimps.
13. Refuse to use AI
In recent interviews, the band members emphasized that they remain faithful to
traditional analogue and digital synthesizers when creating music. They
intentionally refuse to use artificial intelligence for songwriting or sound
generation to preserve the true soul of the 80s.
14. Preparing a new album
The band members recently hinted that they intend to start recording a new
studio album in 2027, which will possibly be titled Undark.
15. Performing in Lithuania for the fifth time
Camouflage is one of those foreign bands visiting Lithuania for the fifth time already, boasting a highly loyal fanbase here.
